About Shane Smith, Author of:

Shane Smith is director (and a founder, in 1977) of the Cheyenne Botanic Garden, Wyoming's only public botanic garden. It is a people-oriented, solar heated conservatory that employs seniors, youth at risk and handicapped individuals. Under his directorship, the project has received recognition awards from Presidents Reagan, Bush (senior) and Clinton for volunteerism and social accomplishments. Smith also received the "Community Hero" award from Wyoming Governor, Jim Geringer for his work with the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens. 

Smith graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture from Colorado State University. In 1984 he received Registration as a Horticultural Therapist (using gardening as a mode of therapy for the mentally and physically challenged). In 1989-90 he served as a Loeb Fellow in Advanced Environmental Studies at Harvard University.

         
Smith is author of three books, the most recent is on home greenhouse gardening titled
Greenhouse Gardener's Companion- Growing Food and Flowers in your Sunspace published by Fulcrum.
        
Since 1978 he has hosted a
weekly radio gardening programs and is an occasional contributor to various magazines. Shane has consulted and lectured extensively on a national basis to numerous public and private organizations and universities in community agriculture, park design and greenhouse projects.
        
In addition, he has consulted and lectured on horticultural therapy, greenhouse design and operation as well as community greening for over 26 years in 27 different states, Mexico and Canada. Internationally his work included assisting gardening/ subsistence projects in, high-altitude villages teaching orchard production, advanced gardening and season-extending techniques.

Contact Consultation: Will work with interested groups in developing community agriculture projects. Subjects include: community greenhouse development, community agriculture development, developing horticultural therapy programs, public relations for grass-roots organization, volunteer management, greenhouse gardening, instilling community participation, creating intergenerational garden programs and more. 


Architectural & Design Consultation:
Provide assistance in pre-design and design activities with architects and/or designers towards developing plans, gardens, greenhouses (including community based and solar heated structures), kit greenhouses and landscape designs. This includes plan reviews, designs for solar heating, plant production, horticultural therapy, alternative energy and training, plant propagation, wheelchair orchards, general disabled accessibility.

Appearances
Recent appearances have included talks at the Alaska Master Gardener conference, Chicago Hardware Show, Northwest Flower and Garden Show. He has lectured or consulted in over 28 states, Mexico and Canada.
